"Armenian-Indian relations with centuries-old history have every
opportunity for further development," Indian Ambassador to Armenia
Achal Kumar Malhotra said in his interview with a Panorama.am reporter.
"Armenian-Indian relations have a history of more than 2000 years.
Even in 149 B.C. Indians lived in Armenia, and currently there is a
large Armenian community in India, with Armenian cultural monuments -
Armenian churches and chapels, as well as educational institutions -
preserved," said the Ambassador.
According to the Ambassador, Armenia and India also carry out active
economic cooperation. India made large investments in IT development
in Tavush region of Armenia. Asked why India chose Tavush region,
the Ambassador said they are guided by recommendations of Armenian
government.
"India's development assistance to Armenia has no preconditions. We
are always guided by the needs of the given country. In this case,
Armenia introduced development program for Tavush region, therefore
we are to see whether we can help. We help and support with pleasure
if we can. When this program is completed and the Armenian government
offers another program and another region, we will again help as far
as possible," said he, stressing that by providing assistance India
only expects good will.
Mr. Malhotra said that there is also good environment for
Armenian-Indian economic cooperation. Commodity turnover between
Armenia and India amounted to USD 60 million in 2011. Armenian-Indian
business forum was held in Yerevan in 2011 October, the Ambassador
reminded, with a focus on the possibilities and prospects of bilateral
economic cooperation.
"In Yerevan, Indian businessmen received necessary information about
Armenia and many are already looking for ways to cooperate. I think
we will see results in the future," said the diplomat.
Dwelling on cultural ties the Indian Ambassador noted that Armenia
and India have signed an agreement on cultural cooperation. Within
the framework of the agreement, Armenia hosted an exhibition of works
by an Indian painter in 2011 February.
Armenia and India will mark the 20th anniversary of establishment of
diplomatic relations on August 30, 2012, said Achal Kumar Malhotra.
Yerevan and Delhi will host festive events dedicated to the 20th
anniversary of diplomatic ties within a year, said the Ambassador.
