Ruben Hayrapetyan, an affluent businessman with links to the
government, was not on the premises of a restaurant owned by his family
when three military doctors were being beaten by security personnel,
according to the Armenian Police.
One of the men, Vahe Avetyan, died in hospital of his severe injuries
late last month.
Hayrapetyan had been interrogated as a witness in the case.
At a press conference on Tuesday Arsen Ayvazyan, the head of the
Police's Chief Investigative Department, said: "Ruben Hayrapetyan was
in Sevan that day. He visited the Harsnakar restaurant compound at
7:30 pm and stayed there for about 30 minutes. He then went to the
Football Academy situated nearby."
Ayvazyan dismissed the reports that one of the accused, Garik
Margaryan, is Hayrapetyan's personal bodyguard. He said all of the
arrested individuals were formally employed by the restaurant, but
some of them occasionally accompanied Hayrapetyan, who is also a
lawmaker and chief of the Football Federation.
Ayvazyan further told journalists that they have asked the court for
permission to unscramble the phone conversations of Margaryan and all
the other accused to find out whether Hayrapetyan had instructed them
to take any action at the time of the incident.
According to the police, no video records of the scuffle at the
restaurant on June 17 are available as none of the cameras in the
territory was equipped with recording devices.
