Russia intends to step up inter-parliamentary cooperation with
Armenia that is one of the factors for strategic relations between
the two countries, Russian Federation Council chairperson Valentina
Matviyenko said.
At the meeting with Armenian National Assembly speaker Hovik Abrahamyan
on Wednesday, Matviyenko said parliaments should play an important
role in the development of relations between the states.
Thus, she noted "good experience of Russian-Armenian
inter-parliamentary relations" and reminded of the years-long
activity of the inter-parliamentary commission. Matviyenko considers
it necessary to modernize the work of the commission and step it
up. "We will take all positive moments and make the work concrete,"
the Russian Federation Council chairperson stressed.
Particularly, it is necessary to develop such forms of cooperation
as joint session of the parliamentary committees and coordination of
efforts within international formats, she noted.
For his part, the Armenian speaker said strategic partnership between
Armenia and Russia developed successfully in all fields.
Abrahamyan said, "The activity of the inter-parliamentary commission
for cooperation between the Armenian National Assembly and the Russian
Federation Assembly facilitates this."
"Due to the years-long work of the commission, inter-parliamentary
relations between Russia and Armenia became systematic. A legal base
has been created and it allows both parties to maintain interaction
in all fields," the Armenian speaker said.
He expressed confidence that the new membership of the
inter-parliamentary commission would work successfully and achieve
new significant results.
He considered relations between Russia and Armenia trusting.
Abrahamyan said, "Of course, such relationship affects
inter-parliamentary cooperation between the National Assembly of
Armenia and the Federal Assembly of Russia."
"In recent years the level of Russian-Armenian inter-parliamentary
relations has considerably increased. Inter-parliamentary contacts
have also intensified," the Armenian parliament speaker said.
In his view, "the meetings between the chairpersons of our legislative
structures facilitate this. They open broad opportunities to discuss
measures to improve inter-parliamentary cooperation and contribute
to strengthening ally relationship between Armenia and Russia."
