The Armenian-Russian agenda is "very intensive, busy and diverse",
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said at a meeting with Russian
Federation Council Chairperson Valentina Matviyenko on Wednesday,
July 11.
The agenda "allows us to move our relations and high-level political
dialogue between the two countries forward", he said.
In his opinion, "strategic partnership based on centuries-old
friendship between the Armenian and Russian peoples provides a strong
basis for our states to continue to develop and deepen mutually
advantageous cooperation".
Sargsyan and Matviyenko stressed the importance of cooperation
between the national parliaments. They commended the work of the
inter-parliamentary commission on cooperation between the Russian
Federal Assembly and the National Assembly of Armenia.
Matviyenko expressed confidence that "inter-parliamentary contacts can
and should play a significant role in the development of interstate
relations".
Sargsyan and Matviyenko spoke about Russian-Armenian economic and
humanitarian cooperation, which in their opinion is an essential part
of bilateral relations.
They also noted the importance of inter-regional cooperation and lauded
Russia-Armenia cooperation in the CIS and the Collective Security
Treaty Organisation, as well as other international organisations.
Trade turnover between Russia and Armenia in 2011 had reached one
billion U.S. dollars.
The two countries have good prospects in many sectors of the economy,
primarily in the energy sector, the power industry, atomic energy,
and many other serious projects.
There is a big potential in joint development of the agro-industrial
sector in Armenia.
"The high level of the political dialogue and mutual desire to
strengthen our strategic partnership create a very good atmosphere
for further development of Russian-Armenian relations," Sargsyan
said earlier. "Trade turnover grows every year. And humanitarian
cooperation becomes increasingly diverse."
"We cooperate practically in all areas, and we are pleased by the pace
with which our relations develop, even though we always want more,"
the president said.
