YEREVAN, JULY 13, ARMENPRESS: Vartavar celebration is considered one
of the five feasts of Armenian Apostolic Church, which due to its
structure and content is related to the land life of Jesus Christ.
Vartavar is celebrated 90-93 days (14 weeks) after Easter and current
year it will be celebrated on July 15.
As Armenpress reports, Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin's Lay Brother
Shahe Ananyan had a briefing with the journalists on July 13.
Vartavar's history dates back to pagan times. The ancient festival
is traditionally associated with the goddess Astghik, who was the
goddess of water, beauty, love and fertility. Yet currently it is a
Christian tradition.
In the words of the interlocutor on this day people of all ages
drench each other with water and roses comparing Christ with rose,
which Grigor Narekats depicted in his works. '~R On this day, liturgy
is being served in the churches and the priests spatter rosewater on
the people, blessing them on this way.
In the words of the spiritual representative such kind celebrations
face a subtle shortcoming; they need to be turned a bit modern.
The priest reminded that if the man was drenched with water it does
not yet mean the year is going to be unlucky, it is superstition.
