Six members of the European Union have sent a letter to the High
Commissioner of the European Union for Foreign Affairs & Security
Policy Catherine Ashton. They request that Ashton should demand from
Azerbaijan to stop repressions.
The members of the European Parliament have hailed the statements
Ashton made on June 26, in which she urged the Azerbaijani authorities
to stop politically motivated persecutions.
At the same time, the members of the parliament mention that after
Eurovision-2012 held in Baku in May, the Azerbaijani authorities have
strengthened pressures on the opposition members and politically
motivated arrests continue. Launching the criminal case against
photojournalist Mehman Husseinov and the arrest of the editor-in-chief
of the Talysh minority's newspaper Talisi Sado Hillal Mamadov are
set forth as examples.
It is stated in the letter that on June 26 the CoE Committee on Human
Rights and Legal Affairs adopted a resolution urging the Azerbaijani
authorities to settle the issue of about 80 political prisoners and
exclude such arrests in the future.
"We are asking you to demand from the Azerbaijani authorities
to urgently end the politically motivated arrests of people for
expressing their opinion and as a member of the European Parliament,
to ensure that the country fulfills its obligations in the sphere,"
the letter of the members of the European Parliament said.
