Turkey's refusal to recognize the presidential election in
Nagorno-Karabakh goes well with its dual standard policy, Deputy
Director of the Caucasus Institute Sergey Minasyan told journalists on
Thursday. He said that Turkey is trying to interfere in the regional
problems but is still outside the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. "Our
Foreign Ministry has made it clear to the Turkish diplomats that in
Nagorno-Karabakh power is not handed down - as is the case in some
neighboring countries - but is formed through legitimate elections,"
Minasyan said. Today Nagorno-Karabakh is elected President. Three
candidates - acting president Bako Sahakyan, MP Vitaly Balasanyan and
vice principal of Stepanakert Branch of the Armenian State Agrarian
University Arkady Soghomonyan - are running for the post. The Turkish
Foreign Ministry has refused to recognize the election and has pointed
out that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains the key obstacle to
peace and stability in the South Caucasus.
