OVIK ABRAAMIAN ELECTED SPEAKER OF ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT

    Interfax
    May 31 2012
    Russia

Ovik Abraamian has been elected the new chairman of the Armenian
National Assembly in a secret ballot on Thursday.

Taking part in the election were 110 parliamentarians, and 102 of
them voted for Abraamian's candidacy. Four other parliamentarians
voted against it and four ballots were found invalid.

Abraamian's candidacy was the only one and was proposed at a Wednesday
evening session of the executive body of the ruling Republican Party.

Abraamian chaired the National Assembly from 2008 to November 2011,
when he resigned to head the Republican Party's campaign staff.

The Republican Party led by President Serzh Sargsyan garnered 44.05%
of the vote in parliamentary elections on May 6, which guaranteed its
majority at the parliament and enabled it to form a new government
    on its own.

The faction of the Armenian National Congress led by former President
Levon Ter-Petrosian is not taking part in the first parliamentary
    session.

The faction of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun
did not take part in the elections of the parliamentary speaker.
