The Heritage Party convened its Eighth Congress on June 2 with the
participation of 150 delegates from across Armenia.
Raffi K. Hovannisian presented his `State of the State' address
highlighting Armenia's domestic challenges and foreign policy
priorities in this critical interval between the parliamentary
elections just past and the presidential polls set for early next
year.
He called for an unprecedented consolidation of civil society,
political forces, and the intelligentsia in order to liberate the
nation from the long-standing shackles of fraudulent, `de facto only'
elections and to deliver the first legitimate, de jure presidency
since inception of the Republic.
The Congress elected a new governing board composed of Hovannisian,
Anahit Bakhshyan, Stepan Safaryan, Armen Martirosyan, Zaruhi
Postanjyan, Hovsep Khurshudyan, Gagik Margaryan, Susanna Muradyan,
Lusine Petrosyan, and Margarita Hakobyan.
Meeting later in executive session, the board reelected Raffi
Hovannisian as its leader, selecting Armen Martirosyan to serve as
vice chair in charge of public policy and Stepan Safaryan as secretary
general for international affairs.
It also decided to authorize Heritage's parliamentary delegation to
resume work at the National Assembly, suggesting Ruben Hakobyan as its
head and Zaruhi Postanjyan as secretary. Heritage Party Press Service
reports that a special determination will be made regarding
Hovannisian's participation in advance of the legislature's fall
session scheduled to open in September.
