Remittances are essential for Armenia, Premier Tigran Sargsyan
stated in Brussels while responding to the questions posed by foreign
journalists.
He noted that Armenia's population is three million, whereas
six-million Armenians live abroad. And those who send remittances to
Armenia are the ones who left the country in the past twenty years,
and not the 4-5 million who live abroad as a consequence of the
Armenian Genocide.
"This refers to old and new emigrants. Ninety-five percent of the
old [emigrants] has never been to Armenia, and this contains a huge
potential which could stimulate our country's economic growth. We have
designed a new strategy for using this potential. By the initiative
of President Serzh Sargsyan, a Diaspora Ministry is established for
the first time; owing to it, we carry out pan-Armenian projects. We
have dozens of pan-Armenian organizations which implement programs
toward Armenia's development," said Sargsyan.
Also, the PM noted that the National Competitiveness Council is
established, whose objective is to carry out projects which will
reveal Armenia's competitiveness and make the country competitive,
and, also, will encourage investments into Armenia.
