Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin said Monday that Tuesday's special
session of the parliament on Turkey's genocide of a million and a
half Armenians nearly 100 years ago had nothing to do with current
poor relations with the country.
Rivlin said the Armenian genocide was "a tragic part of history that
the world must be aware of to ensure that it will not be repeated."
Rivlin decided to make the annual event more formal by giving the
issue its own day in the Knesset rather than holding it on a Monday
or Wednesday when legislation is discussed.
