A Ministry of Agriculture representative says that 2012 is expected
to be a bountiful year for farmers, as some crops - strawberries,
cherries - have already proved. Earlier bad weather did not have the
devastating effect that has occurred in previous seasons.
"The unfavorable weather was 'episodic' and it did not affect the whole
republic. For example, in case of apricot we will have some loss in
particular regions, where even there might be no apricot crops at
all. However, this year we will have more apricot yield than last
year throughout the country," says Gevorg Harutyunyan, Officer in
Charge of Department of Plant Cultivation and Plant Protection at
the Ministry of Agriculture of Armenia.
Nevertheless, heavy rain and hail managed to damage crops in some
provinces of Armenia last week, and peasants complain that the
installed anti-hail stations do not serve their purpose properly.
Harutyunyan says that two types of anti-hail stations are installed
in Armenia; one type is coordinated by the Ministry of Emergency
Situations, and the other type - by private companies.
"The clouds are observed from the Ministry of Emergency Situations
through a location system and if the clouds are dark and it is likely
to hail then the ministry instruct the anti-hail stations to start
working. And as for those stations which have nothing in common with
the location system, then village heads are entitled to shoot [to
disperse the clouds]. Maybe they have shot late, I cannot say for
sure. The anti-hail stations that are coordinated by the ministry,
work properly," he says.
During the past couple of weeks heavy hail in Gegharkunik province
has damaged orchards, autumn wheat sowings, vegetable seedlings
and meadows.
Harutyunyan says that now the provincial authorities are examining
the extent of damage, after which the results will be submitted to
the Ministry of Agriculture, and villagers will be given compensations.
