Armenian president forms new government
YEREVAN June 16
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has formed a new government, the
presidential press service reported on Saturday.
The formation of the new government is conditioned by the fact that
the government resigned on May 31 under the Constitution. The Armenian
National Assembly was elected on May 6 on the results of the
parliamentary elections.
On June 2, the Armenian president appointed Tigran Sarkisyan as the
country's prime minister. He has been taking this position since 2008.
On June 4, Foreign Minister Edvard Nalbandyan and Defence Minister
Seiran Oganyan, as well as Emergency Situations Minister Armen
Yeritsyan, were re-appointed under the president's decrees.
Most members of the cabinet of ministers remained on their positions,
i.e. Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Territorial Administration Armen
Gevorgyan, Minister for the Diaspora Affairs Hranush Hakobyan, Culture
Minister Hasmik Poghosyan, Minister of Education and Science Armen
Ashotyan, Minister of the Environmental Protection Aram Arutyunyan,
Minister of Agriculture Sergo Karapetyan, Finance Minister Vache
Gabriyelyan, Economy Minister Tigran Davtyan, Minister of Energy and
Natural Resources Armen Movsesyan and Justice Minister Grair
Tovmasyan.
Professor Derenik Dumanyan was appointed as minister of healthcare. In
1992-1997 he worked as first deputy minister of healthcare. In
1997-2011 he was director of the Armenian National Institute of
Health. In March 2011 he was election rector of Mkhitar Heratsi
Yerevan State Medical University.
Yerevan former mayor Gagik Beglaryan took the position of minister of
transport and communications. Secretary General of the Armenian
National Olympic Committee Hrachya Rostomyan, who is also president of
the Armenian Basketball Federation, was appointed as minister of
sports and youth affairs.
The Republic Party of Armenia got the majority of mandates in the
parliament. The party is led by the Armenian president. After the
parliamentary elections the Republican Party formed a political
coalition with the centre-right party, Rule of Law (Orinats Erkir),
led by secretary of the National Security Council Artur Baghdasaryan.
Under the Constitution, within 20 days the government should submit
its programme to the parliament. The document will be debated at the
extraordinary session of the National Assembly scheduled for June
20-22.
