Parliamentary elections that had great significance at national and EU
level were held in France and Greece. In Greece the election results
were to decide whether the country would stay in the EU or not. In
France Paris's future foreign policy was to be made clearer by the
election results. The Socialist party and the forces supporting the
present president got the majority of seats in the parliament's lower
house elections held in France yesterday. The final calculation of the
votes has shown that Hollande's party will take 314 seats of the 577 in
the parliament, though 289 seats would also be enough to be a majority.
It became known that Valerie Boyer will also keep her seat in the
parliament after a persistent struggle. In the previous parliament
Boyer was the author of the Armenian Genocide denial criminalization
bill. The Turkish community in France actively fought against her,
but didn't succeed.
The Turks have already stated the fact of another loss with regret.
Deputy Chairman of the Franco-Turkish Friendship Group Jean-Philippe
Maurer was not elected into the new parliament. He lost to socialist
Philippe Brier. "The defeat of Philippe Maurer, who was one of the
main organizers heading the fight against the Genocide bill and of
the signatures collection for the constitutional court's decision is
a strong blow to France's Turks," the Turkish Cihan news agency writes.
