BOGGING PROCESS AT LAKE SEVAN TO ACTIVATE DUE TO INCREASED WATER RELEASE

The bogging process at Lake Sevan will activate due to the increased
water release, environmentalist Knarik Hovhannisyan told ArmInfo.
The expert pointed out that the increased water release will lead to
creation of shallow zones, the water will start warming up quickly,
and this will launch the process of eutrophication. "The warming of
the water leads to appearance of blue, green and other water grass and
leads to bogging", Hovhannisyan said. This perspective is especially
depressing as the water clarity in Lake Sevan has increased from 8-9
cm to 11-12 cm. The warming of the water may have a negative effect
on the ichthyofauna: the changes in the water temperature required
for the vital activities of certain fish species may result in their
annihilation.
Hovhannisyan recalled that the local population and the
environmentalists come out against increasing of the water release
from Lake Sevan and qualify the official version "for agricultural
needs" as untenable. One of the real reasons why more water will be
released from the Sevan is the fear that the lake's rising water may
cover the houses of some people.
On June 22 the Armenian Parliament approved the Government's bill
stipulating releasing additional 150mln c m of water from Lake Sevan
for irrigating an arable area of 40 h. 93 MPs voted pro, 12 contra,
with no abstainers. The State Water Resource Committee says that this
year the irrigation season started amid high air temperature and few
elements, which caused shortage of irrigation water.
