LITHUANIAN DEFENCE MINISTER DISCUSSES SECURITY SITUATION IN THE SOUTH CAUCASUS WITH PRESIDENT OF ARMENIA

On Monday, June 25, Lithuanian Minister of National Defence R.
Jukneviciene met with President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan during
the visit in Armenia. The meeting officials focused on regional
security points.
President of Armenia looked back on the initial causes and progress
of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, as well as Armenia's efforts to
resolve the conflict by peaceful measures. He pointed out the efforts
of the international community and the role of the Minsk Group. "Only
the impartial position of the international community can contribute
to a peaceful resolution process," S. Sargsyan stressed.
Lithuanian Minister accentuated that Lithuania's position fully
coincides with the posture of the international community: the conflict
can only be resolved by applying peaceful measures and no "status quo"
is acceptable.
Minister of National Defence reminded about Lithuania's efforts
to contribute to the solution of the conflict during the Lithuanian
Presidency for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe
(OSCE) and highlighted that the focus will not be shifted away from the
region during the EU Presidency. One of the priorities for Lithuania's
EU Presidency is the Eastern partnership. "Peace and stability in
the South Caucasus is an integral part of the security of Europe,"
R. Jukneviciene said.
Minister of Defence also discussed security situation in the region
and relations with neighbouring countries with Foreign Minister of
Armenia Edvard Nalbandyan.
"We would like to continue the cooperation with the countries of your
region", said R. Jukneviciene .
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia presented his country's position
in regard of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and other relevant points
of foreign affairs.
Later on Lithuanian Minister presented the major energy security
projects undertaken by the Government of Lithuania, underlined the
significance of the Baltic defence cooperation, and noted that Poland
and Lithuania were strategic partners in defence sector.
On Monday R. Jukneviciene also met with His Holiness Karekin II
Surpreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians and honored the
Armenian genocide victims at the Genocide Memorial.
