The atmosphere at the Council of Europe has considerably changed
thanks to the efforts of Azerbaijan which is bribing international
structures, says Naira Zohrabyan, a member of the Armenian delegation
to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
She says the issue was discussed at the session of the Alliance of
Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) earlier on Wednesday. It came
after yesterday's discussion on Azerbaijan's political prisoners at
the Assembly's Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Right.
Naira Zohrabyan says the issue greatly surprised ALDE Chairperson
Anne Brasseur who said at the beginning of the session that she was
deeply shocked by the moral level of yesterday's discussion. Moreover,
she finds such debates unacceptable in the CoE.
We remind that yesterday's discussion was accompanied by reciprocal
accusations and personal offenses.
"Azerbaijani caviar lovers did their best at the Assembly's
Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Right to protect the interests
of Azerbaijan. They were attempting so hard that it seemed they were
protecting the interests of their own children. That was an awful
sight as they were paid and had to protect Azerbaijan's interests,"
said Naira Zohrabyan who followed the discussion to the end.
Asked whether she was likely to raise the issue from the PACE tribute,
Naira Zohrabyan said, "Members of the Armenian delegation believe that
currently we had better not initiate debates on Azerbaijan's caviar
diplomacy. We are waiting for our European colleagues to act. But
if they fail to raise the issue at this session we shall certainly
return to it during the autumn session since Azerbaijan is continually
bribing European delegates and thereby rusting the Council of Europe."
The Armenian delegate says Azerbaijan has bribed nearly all
international organizations, including the UNO, European Parliament.
In its recent report the European Stability Initiative accused the
Azerbaijani delegation to the PACE of bribing their European colleagues
with their caviar.
