YEREVAN, MARCH 1, ARMENPRESS: French lawmakers must continue
working to protect their compatriots from denial, co-chairman of the
Armenian-French friendship group, Socialist party senator Philippe
Kaltenbach said in his statement. "Denial in France should not be
tolerated as it is disrespect for our values. We cannot be passive
in these conditions," the senator said.
Kaltenbach offered setting up a parliamentary group which will deal
with the gathering of information over the issue of penalizing the
denial of genocides in France. He sent a letter to his Armenian
partners of the friendship group asking assistance in gathering
information about denial.
The Constitutional Council of France ruled the bill criminalizing the
denial of the Armenian Genocide unconstitutional. After the ruling
President of France Nicolas Sarkozy assigned Ministry of Justice to
draft a new bill.
