The civil movement has been going on in the Mashtots Park for the
fourth week. The activists are trying to not only keep the park free
from the construction of kiosks there, but also to raise the issue on
public and civic rights. Though the activists "modestly" announce about
the "birth of the self-determined citizens", but it can be stated that
we are witnessing the birth of the New Armenia in the Mashtots Park.
Here, the issue and challenge of the New Armenia has been formulated
the best. Here, the citizens, for the first time, crystallized the
idea which will be the path for the citizens of the New Armenia to
create their own country.
The Armenian parties, busy with the election campaign, retained this
as a minor issue though most of them visited the Park and supported
the protesters.
Here is the whole fascination of the action: various people are
joining it who have completely different stances. The protesters
have formulated their demand flawlessly both in the legal, public and
moral terms. Besides, the action became the best expression of what
the main issue of Armenia is and how far the Armenian political and
business classes are from the willingness to understand and solve
it. Instead, this class keeps making senseless statements on the
inclusion of new people in the party lists, on the elimination of
criminals and businessmen from the parliament and on the protection
of the "people's interest".
New people and new ideas are here in the Mashtots Park. They are
neither in the Freedom Square, nor in the statements of the political
forces, but in the Mashtots Park. The territory of the New Armenia
starts from here which is to expand in an indivertible process clearing
the country's forgeries and myths heavy as dead concrete.
