The efficient response of Yerevan mayor's office in the matter of
the Closed Market has been connected with Mashtots park scandal.
To recall, the Municipality of Yerevan has responded to the scandal
around the Closed Market. A new alarm was received: a construction
company repairing the Yerevan closed market has begun to demolish its
dome-like arch. It has been found out that the owner of the market
started replacing the wood cover of the roof without the relevant
permit. A protocol has been drafted under Article 154 of the Armenian
Law "On Administrative Violations". The work is suspended, and the
territory is under strict control. The Closed Market is included in
the list of the historical monuments of Yerevan.
"It is surprising but the mayor's office responded operatively at
the situation regarding the Closed Market, though the chances were
50/50", lawyer Meri Khachatrayn said to Arminfo correspondent. She
also added that such a quick reaction of the mayor's office could
be its unwillingness to worsen relations with a public initiative
"We are the masters of our city", which has been holding protest
actions in the Mashtots park. The Closed Market problem has been
actively discussed in Facebook.
"The fight was not in vain. I am sure that the authorities of the
city will resolve the problem and all the pavilions will dismantled",
she said.
Earlier Mass Media reported that the closed market was acquired by
Armenian parliamentarian Samvel Aleksanyan from Gagik Tsarukyan,
Leader of Prosperous Armenia Party. The market is to be transformed
into Yerevan City supermarket.
