While the countries across the globe celebrate the World Sleep Day
on March 16, the Armenian Association of Sleep Disorders unveils
alarming figures on the problem of sleeplessnes in the country.

Studies conducted by the Association have revealed that 10%-15%
of Armenia's population suffers from chronic insomnia.

The rate is thought to be very high for the country, as such figures
    are compatible with developed states.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, the president of the Association,
Samson Khachatryan, said the people in Armenia do not absolutely care
    about sleep.

"Many think they waste time by sleeping. But the brain does not stop
functioning while you are asleep," he said. "One of the phases of
sleep is closely associated with learning and memorization processes
and it synthesizes the information obtained."

Another widespread disorder, the expert said, is the restless leg
syndrome, which is characterized by painful sensations in the legs,
which prevent people sleeping. According to Khachatryan, the problem
is observed among 8% of Armenia's population.
