ARCHEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS IN ARENI THIS YEAR'S PRIORITY

YEREVAN, MARCH 20, ARMENPRESS. The schedule for archeological
excavations in the territory of Armenia has not been clarified yet
and may sharply be changed connected with the construction of the
North-South highway.
Speaking to Armenpress, deputy director of Archeology and Ethnography
Institute of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences Gagik Sargsyan
said the excavations of Agarak archeological site is among the
priorities of this year and if the construction works of the road
launch this year the wide-scale archeological excavations will launch.
"It is early to speak about the timeframe of work. Of course, there
are archeological sites, like Areni, which has big significance and
excavations there will take place irrespective of other projects. The
general program though will be specified later. More probably in a
month," Gagik Sargsyan noted and stressed that the Armenian National
Academy of Sciences has not yet summed up the work of the previous
year.
"During the coming weeks the presentation of the complete report
of the carried out work is expected, after which the successiveness
of this year"s works will be clarified," the deputy director of the
institute said.
