This year the United States will take no new steps to recognize the
Armenian Genocide, but by 2015 the US President will by all means
pronounce "Armenian Genocide", Turkish historian Taner Akcam says in
his interview to Taraf newspaper.
It was the USA, Israel and England that gave a free hand to Turkey,
and if this trinity recognizes the Armenian Genocide, Turkey will no
longer be able to behave so jauntily in the world arena, Akcam says.
Moreover, the denial of the Armenian Genocide will isolate Turkey
from the international community. This will make Ankara recognize
the events in 1915 as a crime against the humanity and beg Armenian
people's pardon, he says.
Akcam points out several reasons that do not allow Turkey to resolve
the Armenian Cause. The key reason is that for 90 years the Ottoman
Empire and present-day Turkey have been deceiving their own people
and denying the fact of the Genocide. And if now Turkey confesses
what it did, it will cause its own population's discontent.
The historian also touches on the issue of compensation for the
damage. He says that the problem of reparations should be solved by
means of negotiations between the two states. He considers that both
governments should hold public hearings on this topic, as indemnity
is a moral category and implies not only money. Akcam says that
Turkey should also provide socio-economic assistance to Armenia by
allowing it to use the port of Trabzon or to join the EU with Armenia,
as suggested by Hrant Dink.
