ARMENIA CONCLUDES REGISTRATION OF CANDIDATES FOR PARLIAMENT

Armenia concluded registration of candidates for parliament on March
22. Lists of candidates were received from 8 parties and one political
bloc, News Armenia reports.
The ruling coalition of parties consists of the Republican Party
headed by President Serzh Sargsyan, Prosperous Armenia of oligarch
Gagik Tsarukyan, Orinats Yerkir.
Opposition includes the Armenian National Congress, a alliance
of political parties under leadership of former President Levon
Ter-Petrosyan.
The Republican Party introduced 33 candidates.
Dashnaktsutyun, Heritage, Democratic Party, Communist Party, United
Armenians will take part as well.
The Armenian parliament has 131 seats. 90 MPs are elected according
to party lists, the rest according to single-mandate districts. Some
deputies were put on the proportional list.
180 candidates will struggle for 41 seats in the parliament according
to the majority list.
Elections are planned for May 6, 2012. The previous elections were
held in 2007 with the Republican Party winning them.
