One should never link any hopes for positive changes in Armenia with
external pressure. Such changes may prove costly for the country and
the population, Vahan Hovhannissyan, Head of the ARFD faction in the
parliament, said in a press conference, Monday.
He thinks that free and transparent elections must not be a result
of pressure by "Washington" or "Brussels regional committee".
Hovhannisyan believes that democracy in Armenia can and must be
strengthened exclusively through political fight of its citizens,
their insisting demands from the authorities to change the situation.
"We can see on the example of Ukraine what a foreign political
intervention may result in. As a result of the orange revolution some
positive changes in democracy were achieved, indeed, but the country's
economy proved on the verge of collapse, with the new regime sending
to jail all its rivals. I am sure that we do not need democracy at
such high cost," he said.
Hovhannisyan said that conduct of fair and transparent elections is
explained mainly with the above pressure or discrepancies inside the
coalition. "We hope that the people is tired of the both and will
make a reasonable choice," he said.
It is noteworthy that the prime minister and president of Armenia have
repeatedly stated at meetings with their European partners that they
are going to conduct the most transparent and fair elections in the
history of independent Armenia. In addition, these promises became
a peculiar pet subject for the authorities at the negotiations for
admission of three Armenian parties to the European People's Party.
In this light, with sarcasm characteristic to him Hovhannisyan urged
his compatriots to be realistic and do not think that admission
of these parties to EPP as observers will ensure a big jump to
europeization, for the ticket of the Republican party comprises many
odious persons with doubtful and semi-criminal past.
To recall, the Republican Party of Armenia, Heritage Party and Orinats
Yerkir party were admitted to the EPP as observers in Feb 2012.
