The Turkish prosecutor who appealed the ruling in the Hrant Dink murder
trial has claimed that the individuals standing trial in the case had
connections with the Kemalist ultranationalist organization Ergenekon.
In a 30-page appeal, Hikmet Usta said that the defendants - Erhan
Tuncel and Yasin Hayal - were the chiefs of the Trapizon-based
terrorist group.
Samast, who was a minor at the time of committing the murder, was
a member of the group and received the instruction to assassin the
Armenian-Turkish journalist from its top figures.
He claimed that the court had not given a due attention to his
connections with Ergenekon and failed to establish accountability
measures against individuals also thought to be responsible for
the murder.
The prosecutor said that other individuals (Ercin Yolcu, Ahmet
Iskander, Mustafa Ozturk, Zoynal Abidi Yavuz, Tuncay Uzundal,) who
assisted the organization should have also been considered suspects
as well.
The suspects cooperated with the terrorist group and there is
reportedly an identity between the DNA samples of the Ergenekon group
and Trabzon organization members.
