Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan's interference into the situation
with Mashtots Park was an element of "the electoral show" to improve
the rating of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia. Such statement
came from Gurgen Yeghiazaryan, ex-deputy head of the National Security
Service, a member of the oppositional Armenian National Congress,
Wednesday.
On May 1 President of Armenia, Leader of the ruling Republican Party
of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan visited the Mashtots Park and charged
Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan to immediately remove the boutiques
from the park.
"The authorities took advantage of the given situation to stage
a show wherein the activists fighting against 'malign forces' -
the municipality, clashing with the police, suffering difficulties
suddenly meet 'a kind man' who settles all the problems in their favor
and puts an end to that conflict. I do not want to underestimate
the role of those brave young people who had been fighting for the
last months for their rights and the rights of the citizens, but the
authorities have used even their fight to gain dividends in the eyes
of the population," Yeghiazaryan said.
To recall, a group of young green activists were protesting day and
night at the park against construction of the boutiques. Special
brigades of the activists had repeatedly tried to dismantle the
boutiques, but the police stopped them.
