Teachers and students of the Yerevan State Linguistic University
after V. Bryusov have sent an open letter to President Serzh Sargsyan.
"The teaching staff of the YSLU is deeply concerned over the atmosphere
inside the university. The insulting statements and disrespectful
attitude by Suren Zolyan and his supporter-'free teachers' are
inadmissible. Zolyan's services as a public worker and scientists
are undisputable but his authoritarian style of management inside
the university and negligence towards the teaching staff is deepening
year by year. Zolyan calls a show introduction of the acting rector
but it is Zolyan who makes a show every day sending a small group
of students (40-60 people out of 4,000 students) to the street to
protect his interests," the letter reads. A total of 178 teachers
and students signed the letter.
To recall, on April 17 Armenian Minister of Education and Science
Armen Ashotyan signed a decree on dismissal of Souren Zolyan from
the post of the Rector of the Yerevan State Linguistic University and
on termination of the labor contract signed with Zolyan on 17 March
2008. The press service of the Ministry reported that the dismissal
was preceded by two disciplinary sanctions imposed on Zolyan on April
6 and April 17. The first severe reprimand was for the fact that
Zolyan ignored Armen Ashotyan's instruction not to leave Armenia over
the period from 19 to 23 March and devolved his responsibility upon
another person. The second reprimand was the response to the numerous
violations revealed at the Yerevan State Linguistic University during
the inspection carried out by the Ministry on March 20-27.
