Turkish historian Kemal Cicek, who heads an Armenian studies chair
at Turkey's Institute of History, is going to stand trial for showing
a discriminatory attitude towards Turkish-Armenian intellectual Karo
Palian during a televised debate.
According to Turky's Human Rights Office (IHD), the case will be
submitted to the court later today.
Cicek, who was a guest speaker at CNNTurk's Neutral Zone broadcast,
insulted Palian during the show, urging him "either to love Turkey
or leave the country".
In a statement issued in this connection, IHD has warned that Cicek
points out to Kalian as a target.
"This is exactly how [the assassinated editor-in-chief of Agos]
Hrant Dink was called to the municipality and warned that he would
fall into a big trouble," it says.
Addressing Palian during the debate, the Turkish historian said,
"You can die in California as did your ancestors".
The organization has slammed the author of the broadcast, Ahmet
Hakan, for failure to notice and respond to what it called a racist
statement. The court will be asked to invite the Turkish anchor to
the hearings as a witness.
The Racism and Discrimination Department of IHD's Istanbul office
considers the statement insulting not only to Palian but also to
the Armenian nation. The organization is expected to hold a press
conference today before filing the case with the court.
Hakan's April 25 broadcast, 1915: Common Pain, was attended by Karo
Palian, a journalist of the Radikal newspaper, Orhan Kemal Cengiz,
Kemal Cicek, a former parliament member, Uluc Gurkan, and the rector
of the Giresun University, Aygyun Attar.
