No change in Armenia after general election
ARTICLE | MAY 8, 2012 - 10:41AM
Armenia's ruling Republican Party is poised to command a majority of
seats in the national parliament after winning around 44% of votes in
the elections on 6 May. The centre-right party of Armenian President
Serzh Sargsyan came ahead of its former coalition partner, the
Prosperous Armenia party, which gathered about 30% of votes.
Elections were deemed inclusive and competitive, but some abuses were
reported. Monitors from the Organisation for Security and Co-operation
in Europe (OSCE) praised the "open and peaceful" campaign but pointed
out the "general lack of confidence in the integrity of the
[electoral] process amongst political parties and the general public".
Issues with the running of polling stations, double counting and
over-counting, voting without an ID, prevention of double voting still
remain issues for the authorities to work on, especially before the
forthcoming presidential election.
Country is burdened by unemployment and poverty, as well as a
long-lasting frozen conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, which led to trade
blockage by Turkey and Azerbaijan. After initial thawing, last year,
relationship between Turkey and Armenia returned to hostile following
French votes on recognition of Armenian genocide.
