ARCHBISHOP OSHAGAN DELIVERS KEYNOTE ADDRESS TO THE NATIONAL
REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY TODAY
The delegates to the 2012 National Representative Assembly in Rhode
Island.
Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy of the
Armenian Apostolic Church of America, delivered the keynote address
this morning at the National Representative Assembly (NRA) that is
being hosted by Sts. Vartanantz Church, Providence, Rhode Island.
Clergy and lay delegates representing parishes of the Eastern Prelacy
began deliberating yesterday morning and will continue until tomorrow
at noon. The clergy conference convened on Wednesday, one day earlier
than the full assembly.
In his address to the Assembly the Prelate first expressed his thanks
to the Supreme Lord, who with all mercy kept us as the cultivators of
His will; to His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Holy See of
Cilicia, for his fatherly care and instruction; to the Prelates of
the Western and Canadian Prelacies, Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian
and Archbishop Khajag Hagopian, respectively; to Archbishop Khajag
Barsamian, Primate of the Eastern Diocese; and to the pastor,
Archpriest Fr. Gomidas Baghsarian, the board of trustees, and
affiliate bodies of the host parish, Sts. Vartanantz Church,
Providence.
Building on the presentation given to the delegates by the co-chairs
of the Pontifical Visit Steering Committee yesterday, Archbishop
Oshagans message described the upcoming visit of His Holiness Aram I,
noting that His Holiness will visit all of our communities, will
encourage, advise and instruct us so that we can make our
ecclesiastical-national life more productive and organize ourselves
to face all of the challenges directed at the Armenian Church which
are concerns of our people, both the senior and young generations.
The major portion of the Prelates message was devoted to the theme of
the Pontifical Visit, Witness and Renewal: Taking the Church to the
People. Acknowledging that the Armenian Church and people are late to
reform, he also cautioned that renewal is a heavy responsibility and
change should not take place for the sake of change, but rather it
must be undertaken for the sake of the spiritual nourishment of the
faithful, for the growth of faith, with the participation of the
faithful, and for the sake of a permanent relationship with the
mystical Body of Christthat is to say, the church.
The Prelate concluded, It is a dedicated and sacred duty to be a
witness for Christ and our church, and to undertake this task of
renewal, which if we accomplish willingly and with love, we will
become witnesses to renewal, and the deep wisdom of our adopted
theme, Witness and Renewal, will make us worthy of the gratitude and
appreciation of all generations. Therefore, let us move forward and
work with this faith and commitment.
