YEREVAN. - Armenia's Free Democrats Party issued a statement whereby
it presented its evaluation of the May 6 National Assembly elections.
"The elections could have been a good foundation on the road to
Armenia's democratization and liberalization, but these elections
did not meet the expectations.
The election results demonstrated that the country's dire socioeconomic
condition greatly affects the free exercising of the Armenian citizen's
right to choose, [and] the pro-government [political] parties took
advantage of this. Election bribe and false philanthropy overshadowed
the real results of the elections.
These elections did not record the Armenian citizen's true will and
the political forces' real ratio at the Parliament.
Even though the actual course of the electoral process at the polling
stations and the relatively equal conditions for using television
broadcast during the pre-election campaign can be assessed as progress,
the election violations committed outside of the polling stations
have obscured the legality and legitimacy of the elections," the Free
Democrats Party's statement reads in particular.
