"The CIS survived a tough stage of development - apathy and lack of
confidence in perspectives," states Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan in
his article published on May 16 in the Russia-based Vedomosti. It is
like a suitcase without a handle which is hard to carry but a pity
to throw away, he describes the CIS. However, the agreement on FTA
signed in Saint Petersburg is evidence to the reality of integration,
    the prime minister thinks.

Listing the advantages of this agreement, such as reduction of existing
limitations stipulated by earlier reached bilateral agreements, better
conditions for trade, subsidy, the prime minister of Armenia states
the new forms of cooperation will cause an acute sense of fairness
in the relations of the CIS members, abuse of rules of the games by
one country or another, at the same time the difference in levels of
social and economic development will make it difficult to achieve
parity, which is the main goal of those interested in the current
productive integration. He thinks the solution of these problems is
the logic of co-existence of modern states.

"We have always been ardent supporters of deepening economic relations
within the scope of the CIS and the Eurasian Union. At the same
time, joining the Customs Union is meaningless due to geopolitical
reasons - there are no common borders with Russia or Kazakhstan or
Belorussia," says the prime minister, adding that stimuli are needed
for integration, such as softer conditions of cooperation within the
framework of the Union, receiving separate preferences.

"The key condition for the survival and functioning of the economy
is maximum possible extension of the geography of economic cooperation.

    >>From this point of view, integration within the framework of
the CIS, Eurasian Union and now the European community must be
viewed as mutually complementary. Hence, there is no controversy
if Armenia launched along with the integration of process in the
post-USSR territory the negotiations on economic rapprochement with
    the European Union."

The prime minister says having launched negotiations on DCFTA with the
EU, in the upcoming two or three years Armenia will do intensive and
scrupulous work for the introduction of European standards which set
high bars for production, storing, transportation and sale of goods.

The negotiations with the EU cover our legislation, safety control
in production. This is tremendous and costly work but first of all
we need it, our consumers should also be convinced that whatever we
produce in Armenia is of quality, safe and reliable, Tigran Sargsyan
thinks. "As a result, a free trade agreement with the EU will ensure
significant process in Armenia, boost essentially export and import,
reduce significantly trade deficit. It is symptomatic that Ukraine
and Moldova also stated such intentions - to enter into a free trade
    area with Europe."
