The Armenian delegation succeeded to prevent the conduction of
the next Inter-Parliamentary Union's Assembly in Azerbaijan. The
decision was going to be made at the 127th gathering in Quebec,
Canada October 21-26.
The proposal was made by the head of the Azerbaijani delegation.
Finally, it was decided to conduct it in Mongolia, head of Armenia's
delegation, member of the Executive Committee Karen Tshmarityan,
and delegation's member Heghine Bisharyan told at a news conference
Tuesday.
"I have just asked the principle with which the hosting country is
being selected," Tshmarityan said.
Presenting the policy of his country toward ethnic minorities, head
of Azerbaijani delegation said about 30,000 Armenians are living
in Azerbaijan and 20% of their territories are "occupied" by the
Armenian forces.
Heghine Bisharyan noted with regret that the MPs of the Union did
not know much about the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
She said her main accent in the speech was "who Azerbaijan is and who
Armenia is." In this pre-context the case of Azerbaijani murderer Ramil
Safarov and his glorification in Azerbaijan was brought as an example.
The speakers said the whole staff of the Hungarian delegation asked
to meet with the Armenian one and extended their apologies.
The Hungarians offered to start the restoration of Armenian-Hungarian
suspended relations on this level. Tshmarityan said today that they
do not consider the restoration of relations with the Hungarian
delegation expedient yet.
