The speaker of Turkey's parliament has criticized France for breaking
off with the country because of the Armenian Genocide.
At a meeting with the heads of the Turkish and French Trade Chambers,
Cemil Cicek said the dispute over the Genocide has caused the current
coolness between the two countries.
Addressing the French parliament's Genocide penalization bill, which
was later declared unconstitutional, and the fact of including the
topic in the French textbooks, the Turkish official said it is a
historical issue between the Armenians and Turks, with France having
nothing to do with all that.
Cicek reportedly told the guests that they are ready to confront
their history.
"There are unbiased historians and scholars. Why don't your historians
study the matter? Whatever the outcome, we are ready to accept it,"
he said, describing France's genocide bill as an attempt to violate
human rights.
