USA AMBASSADOR TO ARMENIA STRESSED THE INTEREST OF NATO IN THE PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT OF NKR CONFLICT
GYUMRI, NOVEMBER 1, ARMENPRESS: "NATO week" in Armenia dedicated to
the 20 year lasting interaction was launched in Gyumri.
Representatives of NATO member countries USA Ambassador to Armenia
John Heffern, Great Britain Ambassador Catherine Lich, William Laho
general officer of NATO-Armenia relations in Armenia, Samvel Lazarian
the head of MFA arms control and international security department and
others had a meeting with the students of State Pedagogical University
of Gyumri. Samvel Lazarian presented "NATO week "event and noted
that it was regularly carried out in the capital, as well as in
different regions of Armenia. The event is aimed to inform Armenian
society about the relations of Armenia with NATO.
During the meeting each of the guests presented their opinion on the
level of NATO-Armenia relations and on the needed reforms.
"The cooperation of NATO and Armenia is more important for Armenia.
Armenia has two closed borders due to its geographic position, and
there are issues on another side if taking into consideration
Russia-Georgian border so the country cannot completely rely on one
border and one partner. It is necessary to have options and
opportunities in terms of security policy. Cooperation with NATO is
first of all beneficial for Armenian Armed Forces, Armenian government
and nation. Surely Armenia also has its investment in this
collaboration and Armenia-NATO relations are of bilateral interest.
The peace among the neighboring countries is really important for NATO
member countries so NATO is interested in the peaceful settlement of
NKR conflict. And despite the fact that the settlement process is in
the framework of OSCE Minsk Group, in this terms the security is one
of the spheres that is of multilateral interest" noted USA Ambassador.
William Laho general officer of NATO-Armenia relations in Armenia
presented the structure and the principals of the activity of the
organization, its issues and values, noting that such UN values as
freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law are enshrined in
NATO's founding agreement.
William Laho noted that each country willing to become NATO member was
deciding itself the level of the cooperation with NATO. The
organization highly evaluated the participation of Armenia in
peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo.
The meeting was concluded with the questions of the students.
