The leader of Prosperous Armenia party (PAP) has criticized the
minister of justice for a recent statement regarding the prisoners who
sew up mouths or eyes in detention facilities.
At a meeting with PAP young activists on Saturday, Gagik Tsarukyan
expressed his anger with Hrayr Tovmasyan's statement saying that the
move equivalent to piercing ears.
`Our minister of justice says without feeling ashamed that the
detainees sewing up their mouths and eyes do almost the same as the
girls who have their ears pierced. Why does a man do that? Out of
disappointment and injustice,' he said, calling for measures to call
everybody to order and demand an explanation for what happened.
Addressing the recent incidents in detention facilities, the minister
said at a Wednesday briefing that sewing up eyes or cutting a finger
is as usual for prisoners as ear-rings for girls.
Concerned over situation in prisons, Tsarukyan asked the PAP lawmakers
attending the meeting to convey his concerns to the minister in person
and oblige him to take appropriate measures to probe into the causes
of the incidents.
