In five years Armenia and Iran will put into exploitation Meghri

Armenia's President Serzh Sargsyan, Energy and Natural Resources
Minister Armen Movsisyan, Iranian delegation headed by the co-chair
of the Armenian-Iranian inter-governmental commission Majid Namuji
    attended the event.

Movsisyan said the construction of the hydro power plant on Arax
River is first of all important in regard to development of economic
cooperation between the regions of the two countries. He said the
construction's feasibility study was done by Iranian Mahab Ghods
    consulting company.

"The study was coordinated and supervised by Armenian-Iranian joint
committee. Another two hydro power plants are expected to be built
on Arax River - Meghri plant on the Armenian side and Gharachilar -
    on the Iranian," Movsisyan said.

After the end of the construction the electricity produced by Meghri
plant will be transferred to Iran for 15 years after which the plant
will be handed to the Armenian side for free.

"Applying of hydro power diplomacy is one of the means to establish
peace, stability, prosperity in the region," Iranian energy minister
said, rating high the role of water diplomacy in the world.

The Iranian official stressed that the implementation of such economic
projects will promote the welfare of the people, stressing that the
construction of Meghri and Gharachilar power plants were the expression
of the common will of the two countries.

The contract on construction of hydro power plant on Arax River has
been signed between the governments of the two countries still in
2007 and ratified by the parliaments of the two countries in 2008.
