THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES WILL CLOSE THE CHURCH OF HOLY SEPULCHER IN JERUSALEM, IF THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT PAY OFF THE WATER TAX BILL
YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 8, ARMENPRESS. The debt of water tax bill may become
the reason to close the Church of Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. The
Government must pay the debt off, not the Church. In a conversation
with "Armenpress" the member of St. James Brotherhood Fr. Koryun,
who added that actually the Church of Holy Sepulcher is not closed,
but they have such intentions. The member of the brotherhood stated:
"The Church of Holy Sepulcher has a debt of water tax bill. We
all use the water in the cathedral both for drinking and domestic
necessities. The cathedral used water free of charge both during the
Ottoman rein and the British mandate, that"s to say the church was
allowed to use water free of charge and taxation. During last five
years the Government granted the water to a company, which claims
on paying the water tax bill. We Christians are against it and even
if the tax should be paid the Government must pay the tax, not the
church, because we had been free of taxations."
According to Fr. Koryun, there is a disagreement between the Christian
communities, the Government and the water supplying company and there
is a danger that this disagreement may cause the closing the Church
of Holy Sepulcher.
