A year ago, a group of environmentalists in Armenia averted the
construction of a small HPP on Trchkan waterfall, which presumably
would lead to the destruction of the waterfall.

Thanks to the group, the waterfall already has a passport. The passport
of Trchkan waterfall has been confirmed as a natural monument according
to Nature Protection Minister Aram Harutyunyan's decree no.

    293-N dated on 09.11.2012.

"The passport clearly defines the territory of the waterfall and the
activities that are allowed or prohibited on the site," says Levon
Galstyan, e member of Trchkan initiative group.

The passport says that the waterfall is owned and maintained by Mets
Parni community of Lori Marz. The document also prohibits all types
of construction and pollution in the neighbouring area.

The environmentalists later headed for Trchkan waterfall where
they found the area contaminated and buried in garbage. "We do not
want to be engaged in scavenging alone. We have cleared the area
several times. Let the local-self-government body organize the
garbage disposal; it will not take them much money and efforts,"
    said Mr Galstyan.
