A spokesman for the Iranian embassy to Azerbaijan has commented on
articles in Azerbaijani media on the construction of a hydropower
plant on the Iranian-Armenian border.
The spokesman said that the construction of two hydropower plants on
the Iranian-Armenian border is implemented next to the border line
on the Araz River between Armenia and Naxcivan and has nothing to do
with the occupied Azerbaijani territories and Karabakh, APA said.
The Araz water will be returned to the river after being used to drive
tribunes of the hydroelectric power plants and it will neither pollute,
nor reduce the level of water in the river.
The construction projects of the hydroelectric power plants in
Armenia's Meghri and Iran's Qarachilar were drawn up by Iran's Energy
Ministry. It is needed to transport water through 18-km-long channel
in order to operate the hydroelectric plant which can produce up to
130 MW electricity. The plant is being realized within the Meghri
project that is located on the Iran-Armenia-Naxcivan border.
It is also planned to discharge water through 17-km-long channel in
order to start the Qarachilar hydroelectric power plant in Iran's
Qarachilar territory on the border with Armenia.
