RULING COALITION FAILS EXTRAORDINARY SITTING INITIATED BY OPPOSITION IN ARMENIA

    ARMINFO
    Wednesday, November 21, 12:51

The extraordinary sitting of the Armenian Parliament that was initiated
by the Armenian National Congress has been failed for lack of quorum,
as forecasted. Only 44 out of the necessary 66 votes were received. The
coalitional parties: Republican Party and Orinats Yerkir, fulfilled
their promises and did not attend the sitting.

Head of the RPA faction Galust Sahakyan explained such behavior of
the Republicans with an unwillingness to participate in the political
show of the opposition. "It is our constitutional right and no one can
blame us. In addition, 15 parliamentarians of the RPA faction are on
business trips," Sahakyan said. "Too little time is left before the
presidential elections to make any legislative reforms," he said when
commenting on the legislative amendments suggested by the opposition.

He said that the opposition has become quite skillful in organization
of political shows. "We remember what happened 4 years ago on March
1 2008. They again organized a show and then gave marching orders to
the people. Now these forces try to remind about themselves at the
expense of other parties," Sahakyan said hinting at the Armenian
National Congress that, as he thinks, exploits the potential of
Prosperous Armenia and ARFD parties in its political goals.

To recall, ANC with the support of Heritage, ARFD and Prosperous
Armenia parties initiated extraordinary sitting of the parliament
for Nov 21 to suggest amendments to the Electoral and Criminal Codes,
and to the Law on the Population Register.

It is noteworthy that even the oppositionists did not attend the
extraordinary sitting in full staff. Only 44 out of 53 oppositionist
MPs were present at the sitting.
