DOHA: Qatar is taking a closer look at the possibility of recruiting
housemaids from some East European countries such as Macedonia,
Armenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Al Sharq reported yesterday quoting
unnamed sources at the Ministry of Labour. The idea is to diversify
the markets that supply maids and other domestic helpers to Qatar
and break the monopoly of some major manpower exporting countries,
the daily said. Other new countries that are on the shortlist of the
labour ministry to explore recruitment of household helpers include
Cambodia and Bangladesh in Asia, and Tanzania, Mauritius and Kenya in
Africa. The daily hinted that other GCC countries are also thinking
of exploring the above markets. "We want the manpower export markets
to be highly competitive," a ministry source was cited as saying. The
