High rank persons are behind the forest mafia in Armenia, the head
of the "Green Union of Armenia", Hakop Sanasaryan, told Arminfo
correspondent.
He also pointed at shadow activity of the state non-commercial
organization "Armles", which cut the best trees under the guise of
sanitary extraction of timber. "In 2011 the government underfinanced
"Armles" by more than 20%. For this reason, it cuts the best trees, as
it knows that top officials will shut their eyes to that", - he said.
Another problem of the Armenian forests are the nearby villages,
the residents of which cut trees to heat their houses and to cook,
so that to economize gas and electric power. Every such family fires
about 25-30 cubic metre of firewood every year.
As experts say, the forest coverage of Armenia reduced from 25% to 8%
over the last 20 years. According to investigation of IUCN and ICARE,
the scales of illegal extraction of timber in Armenia exceed official
data by 80 times.
