AIBA YOUTH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS HOST NATION READY FOR GLORY
The Armenian boxing squad will be competing with a full 10-member team
in the forthcoming AIBA Youth World Championships in its capital city
of Yerevan. The Armenian Boxing Federation has put in maximum effort
to ensure that requirements are met to have a top-quality event that
will showcase the very best of the local hospitality. They are also
confident that their athletes can make a mark and use the atmosphere
generated by performing in front of the home crowd to collect medals
come the business end of the tournament.
Armenia organised the successful AIBA Junior World Championships in
2009 in which their boxers claimed one gold, two silvers and four
bronze medals in the same venue, the Karen Demirchyan Sport Complex.
They are aiming for a similar return at youth level now.
The Armenian national team prepared for the event by competing at the
Pavlyukov Youth Memorial Tournament in Russia and at the Klitchko
Brothers Tournament in Ukraine. Facing some extremely strong
opponents, they did well in both events.
Top Light Flyweight (46-49kg) Hayrik Nazaryan, who has been boxing
since 2002 and advanced to the quarter-finals of both the 2011
European Junior Championships and 2011 AIBA Junior World
Championships, is now ready to make the step into medal territory now
that he has the experience of international tournament pressure.
Armenia has always been famous for its boxers in the lowest weight
classes and Flyweight (52kg) star Henrik Mokoyan is in the mould of
his famous predecessors. The 18-year-old athlete secured silver medals
in the 2010 European Junior Championships in Lviv, Ukraine, and at the
2008 European Schoolboys Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia, so he
knows what it takes and what it would mean for his nation.
Multiple-National Champion Zaven Ayvazyan will be representing the
Caucasian nation in the Bantamweight (56kg) class. The 18-year-old
athlete from the Lori region of the country and has been competing in
the international level since 2008 therefore he is a another bright
medal hope for Armenia.
New Lightweight (60kg) sensation Armen Darchinyan defeated Russia's
AIBA Junior World Championships bronze medallist Artem Melkonyan at
the Pavlyukov Youth Memorial Tournament in April and that victory has
given him the self-confidence needed to go for gold on home soil.
Gor Yeritsyan, who has been trained by coach Martun Melikyan at the
Dynamo Sport Company since 2005, is the spearhead of the current youth
squad. The Light Welterweight (64kg) boxer claimed a bronze medal at
the 2011 European Youth Championships as well as at the 2010 European
Junior Championships. Now his target is to reachthe top of the podium
in Yerevan.
Light Heavyweight (81kg) No.1 Nikol Arutyunov, born in Russia from
Armenian parents, competed in the previous editions of the Russian
National Championships at both junior and youth level but has now
pledged allegiance to the country of his ancestors. Arutyunov won the
qualification event in Armenia and as a result will compete for the
host nation in the AIBA Youth World Championships.

Middleweight (75kg), Heavyweight (91Kg) European Junior Championships
bronze medallist Rafayel Simonyan and National Youth Champion Tigran
