Azerbaijan blacklists head of Georgian Writers Union over
Nagorno-Karabakh visit
BAKU. Nov 22
The head of the Writers Union of Georgia has been declared persona non
grata by Azerbaijan for visiting Nagorno-Karabakh, the country's
disputed enclave that is under Armenian military occupation, without
consent from Azeri authorities, Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry is trying to identify all the members of the delegation
that Makvala Gonashvili took to Nagorno-Karabakh with her, ministry
spokesman Elman Abdullayev said.
Armenian media said Makvala Gonashvili led a 10-member delegation to
the Writer As A Peace Messenger poetry festival in Nagorno-Karabakh in
mid-September.
Gonashvili told reporters afterward that her visit had not been a
political move and that she had been unaware that Azeri approval was
needed for it.
