YEREVAN.- The basis of Armenia's draft law "On Domestic Violence"
remains the same, but many details have changed, director of Women's
Rights Center Susanna Vardanyan said.
"Since the NGOs are unable to initiate legislation, the draft law
'On Domestic Violence' was handed over to the Ministry of Labor and
Social Affairs to be submitted to the government," she told reporters
on Monday.
Vardanyan said they had been working on a project for two years
trying to take into account international experience to adapt the
law to Armenia's conditions. The project has also been studied by
many experts, including by the Warsaw Institute of Human Rights.
"Under the order of Armenia's Prime Minister, an interdepartmental
committee will be set up to deal with gender issues. The bill has also
been discussed in the Council of Europe. The final document will be
presented to the Prime Minister on December 10," she said.
Asked about the statistics on domestic violence, Susanna Vardanyan
presented data of the independent research center as of 2007.
According to the research, 39% of Armenia's women are subjected to
domestic violence, 12% of them - to serious physical violence, 5% -
to sexual violence, and the rest subjected to psychological pressure.
