Armenia's second president Robert Kocharyan released a statement
relating to the National Assembly's decision to deprive Prosperous
Armenia party MP Vartan Oskanian of parliamentary immunity.
"I have thoroughly familiarized myself with the materials of the 'case'
and could not find the answer to the main question - what do Armenian
National Service, prosecutor's office and parliament have to do with
good relations between Jon Huntsman, Vartan Oskanian and Civilitas
Foundation headed by him?. This is a crying case of self-discrediting
of the parliament with grave consequences for the country. It is not
what Armenia needed, especially now," the statement of the second
president says.
"Vartan Oskanian was one of the most successful ministers and one
of the few Armenian political figures that stood the trial of the
authorities. He was effective and frank being in power and now as
well. He is absolutely veracious, which is a rare quality in our
political reality. People with such qualities and earnings should be
cherished and not persecuted, even for the sake of own reputation.
Moreover, he represents a party that has a very serious electorate.
The absurdity of this case is disappointing. I regret for what has
happened and express my sympathies and support to Vartan Oskanian,"
the statement concludes.
