CHRISTIAN CHILDREN ARRESTED BY EGYPTIAN AUTHORITIES

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 3, ARMENPRESS: Two Egyptian boys were arrested
on charges of insulting Islam in Beni-Suef city. Armenpress reports
referring to Interfax. They are 10 and 9 years old and from Christian
families. Children were arrested based on the complaint of Imam, who
saw the children tearing Koran. At first Imam led them to the church,
to be punished by the priest. But after receiving a refusal Imam went
to police.
Christianity is a minority religion in Egypt. Egyptian Christians
are known as Copts and account for about 10% of the population. Over
95% of Egyptian Christians belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church of
Alexandria an Oriental Orthodox Church. The Coptic Church constitutes
the largest Christian community in the Middle East.
