    PEACEKEEPERS CSTO BEGIN THEIR FIRST EXERCISES IN KAZAKHSTAN

    The peacekeeping contingent Organization of Collective Security Treaty
    (CSTO) today began their first exercises in Kazakhstan, reported a
    spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry.

    "The drill involved more than a thousand troops from Russia, Armenia,
    Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan," the spokesman said
    in a meeting with journalists.

    The exercises "Brotherhood unwavering 2012" will be held until October
    17 in the polygons of Iliyski Kazakhs, Shoskala and Bereg.

    The peacekeepers used during the drill about 70 cars and more than
    30 armored vehicles and four Mi-17 helicopters (Mi-8).

    The troops will be exercised in separating warring parties armistice
    monitor compliance, prevent illegal entry of weapons in conflict zone,
    escorting humanitarian aid and transport to protect them from attacks.

    Observers were invited representatives of the Department of
    Peacekeeping Operations of the UN Peace and foreign diplomats
    accredited in Kazakhstan.

    "From now on we will make this a regular drill on par with other
    maneuvers and training plans framed in combat instruction sets,"
    the secretary-general of the CSTO, Valeri Semerikov.

    The Organization of the Collective Security Treaty Organization is a
    multinational regional political-military interaction created in the
    framework of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and formed
    by Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Armenia.
